Metaphors are not innocent…

July 22, 2009

I believe in education, and I believe that school is an outdated institution that entrenches itself further and further in a metaphor of business: of efficiency, profit, measurable results and standing operating procedures. All of which engender decisions that take school further and further away from those structures that encourage intrinsic motivation and learning, according to all the research.

I believe that school finds itself in a situation similar to that of corporate capitalism: its mores are untenable, yet it is incapable, within itself, of the paradigm shift necessary to bring about that change that could  sustain itself.

Do schools kill creativity?
